ben suggested to initiate keyboard shortcuts for the top tool bar click on the apple and then universal access and then the mouse tab turn the mouse keys off and tick the
'press the option key five times to turn mouse keys on or off'
ensure the enable access box is ticked at the bottom left..
you can now access the top tool bar via the numeric keyboard navigate with keys 1-9 and enter becomes 5
